Highlands SWAT Youth: Champions of Tobacco Prevention, Extending Holiday Greetings
December 9, 2024
Our Highlands SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) has launched the 24-25 school year with remarkable enthusiasm. Over the past few months, these young individuals have been actively educating their peers and the community about the risks associated with tobacco, vaping, and secondhand smoke.
Comprising youths aged 11-17 from all public middle and high schools in Highlands County, our SWAT Chapter has been a steadfast advocate for tobacco prevention in our community for several years. In addition to intensifying their efforts within their schools, our SWAT Youth are working to increase awareness and visibility throughout the community.
The Highlands County SWAT Youth have participated in public speaking engagements, including school board and county commission meetings, to educate influential decision-makers about current youth tobacco use rates and the ongoing challenge of youth vaping.
This quarter, our SWAT Youth were involved in events such as Not a Lab Rat Day, Red Ribbon Week, and various fall festivals. They also participated in the annual Christmas parades in Avon Park, Sebring, and Lake Placid, distributing palm cards and candies to spread awareness.
We are incredibly proud of our youth and their proactive advocacy for health and a tobacco-free future in Highlands County. Quarter two was a tremendous success, and we look forward to the opportunities the New Year will bring for our Youth.
