Spotlight on Dusty McGee: TFP Highlands Past Chair
December 17, 2024
Sgt. Dusty McGee has been a steadfast advocate for a healthier Highlands County, serving as the 2023-2024 Chair of the Tobacco Free Partnership (TFP) of Highlands County. Dusty’s dedication to the partnership and his role in the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office showcase his commitment to creating positive change in our community. A husband, father, and civil servant, Dusty has been involved with TFP since 2021, bringing his leadership and perspective to the table.
As Dusty wrapped up his role as 2023-2024 Partnership Chair; we wanted to take a moment to highlight his passion for tobacco prevention and the unique role he and the Sheriff’s Office play in supporting the partnership's mission.
Q: Which tobacco issue is most important to you and why?
A: "For me, youth prevention is the most critical issue. In my line of work, I've seen how widely accepted addictions can lead to lifelong battles and health problems. As a father, I want to ensure the next generation grows up in a community where they aren’t bombarded with tobacco marketing or exposed to harmful products like flavored e-cigarettes. Protecting our kids and empowering them to make healthy choices is a top priority.
Q: How do the Tobacco Free Partnership’s (TFP) objectives align with your individual concerns or priorities?
A: "TFP’s focus on policy change, education, and community involvement perfectly aligns with my personal and professional priorities. As a law enforcement officer, I see the long-term effects of health issues and the burden they place on families. TFP’s emphasis on creating environments where tobacco use isn’t normalized—like smoke-free parks and workplaces—is essential for building a healthier Highlands County."
Q: What unique role can you or your organization play in advancing TFP’s goals?
A: "The Sheriff’s Office is in a unique position to support TFP’s mission by providing outreach and education through community programs. We engage with schools, neighborhoods, and local leaders, which gives us a platform to share information about the dangers of tobacco use. Additionally, we can model healthy behaviors within our department by supporting tobacco-free initiatives and encouraging our team to participate in prevention efforts."
Dusty’s leadership has been instrumental in driving the partnership’s initiatives forward, from increasing awareness about the dangers of tobacco to fostering collaboration with other community stakeholders. His dedication to both his community and family shines through in every effort he makes within our Highlands TFP.
We are grateful for Dusty’s contributions as our 2023-2024 TFP Partnership Chair and look forward to continuing to work with him as we strive to make Highlands County a healthier place to live, work, and play.
