Highlands SWAT Kicks Off the 2025-2026 School Year with Energy and Purpose
September 23, 2025
The Highlands SWAT (Students Working Against Tobacco) chapter kicked off the 2025-2026 school year with incredible momentum and excitement. Over the past few months, these passionate youth leaders have been hard at work educating their peers and the broader community about the dangers of tobacco use, vaping, and exposure to secondhand smoke.
Our SWAT chapter is made up of dedicated students ages 11–17, representing every public middle and high school in Highlands County. For years, they have been a strong voice for tobacco prevention, working to create a healthier, tobacco-free future. This year, they are taking their efforts to the next level—expanding their outreach not only within their schools but also across the entire community.

Highlands County SWAT youth have stepped into leadership roles by speaking at public meetings, including the Highlands County School Board and Board of County Commissioners. Their goal is to educate key decision-makers about the latest youth tobacco trends and the growing challenge of youth vaping, while advocating for policies that protect young people.
Beyond advocacy, SWAT members have been active at community events, recruiting new members, and raising awareness about the risks of tobacco and vaping. Their presence on school campuses has been especially impactful, as they continue to grow their chapter and inspire peers to join the movement for change.
We are incredibly proud of these young advocates and their commitment to promoting health and wellness in Highlands County. Their efforts made the first quarter a tremendous success, and we look forward to seeing what they accomplish in the months ahead.
